How finance is related to "to kill a mocking bird"
In all areas of life, there are issues underlying any societal operations. In the area of finance, there are several ethical issues that govern any prudent use of resources. To Kill a Mockingbird offers a perfect example of why those who are unable to speak for their own welfare ought to be fairly dealt with. In our present world, the one who has is the one who matters. The one who has not is regarded lowly. This is not in any way different from the situation in this novel. It is very unfortunate that society does not place importance in the fact of being human. The status of an individual is assessed against their financial back up. Where does this leave the guy that has nothing? What then is the state of the poor? How are the poor looked at? What is similar between the way the racially different are considered in the novel and the way they are considered in our contemporary society? These are some of the questions that this paper is going to address. The bias in this study will be in the area of finance. It will look at some of the situations that present themselves in money matters, which can be measured against the experiences in Maycomb country of the book To Kill a Mockingbird. In other words, it will study the relationship between the novel, and the ethical issues around finance.
A Background into the Novel
In order to sufficiently place finance into the context of this novel, it is important to offer a brief explanation of the main concern addressed in this novel. "To Kill a Mockingbird," was written at a time when the American society priced racial oppressive tendencies. This as many would already be aware of, meant that the Americans of black origin were greatly enslaved. It was so grave that as seen in the case of Tom, the truth is irrelevant. Tom, who happened to be black, was accused of rape. In this case it was irrelevant that the evidence presented pointed to the innocence of Tom. It was, as it were, the white man that spoke, and in whenever that happened the black man always lost. It was very unfortunate to be black. It did not matter that no one really chose to be born as such. The idea throughout points to the mocking bird as one that is never heard inventing its own melodies, but constantly uses those of others (Lee, 1960, p. 33). The book is comes as an expression of the kind of injustices that took place within the American society at the time in as far as race was concerned. Some of the most important personalities here include, Scout, Jem, Atticus, and Boo. The whole society was against Boo, because he does not fit within what society considers being the acceptable. Apparently he has nothing to offer society, but it in the final analysis turns out that he is not a bad person at all. Very often society rejects people as a result of prejudices. If society does not understand it seeks means to explain, whether the explanation has its foundation on reality or not notwithstanding. Scout and her brother Jem soon found out that the guy they always avoided was actually sending them presents, and eventually saves Jem from possible death. Atticus had instructed his children in the way of true justice, and they eventually realized what it really meant when they realize that the guy that everyone in society hates so much is no t exactly the kind of person society claims he is (Lee, 1960, p. 33). So how then, can this be applied in relation to the area of finance?
Financial Stability as a Form of Alienation
It is unfortunate that society considers, as already mentioned, that those who have a lot of money are the good ones, to be identified with. The world as it is today operates in class systems, such that those who are unlucky spend their lifetimes in a pool of insecurities, caused by all sorts of evils: poor health due to lack of money to pay for proper medical services, dangers of malnutrition due to inability to afford good meals, severe ignorance due to lack of proper education, lack of proper place to stay due to high costs in housing, and the list goes on. What all of this says is that you are somebody as long as you have what it takes, and it takes money. This leaves those who do not have it unable to express themselves (The JBHE Foundation, 2003). Cases have been reported where hatred exists between persons simply because one is better endowed than others. Society brands names to those who have not. This is evident even today. When persons from first countries are visiting third world countries, are often cautioned that they must be careful not to loose their lives or money because the persons in third world countries are thieves' and not exactly human, that is they can easily kill and not feel a thing about it. In actual fact, cases of rowdiness simply reflect the height of imbalance in society, especially as far as resources are concerned. This gives no one right to stand against another on account of prosperity. These kinds of things reflect the gap in the financial pockets of each of these people, not the real status. It is morally unacceptable, in deed intolerable that people be divided along economic lines. Unfortunately greed has overtaken care and concern for others. We witness everyday people killing for money. Cases where one country attacks another simply because that other country has what the mightier country does not have, in order to gain access to it. Often the mightier countries, though wrong, go unpunished simply because the weaker one has no voice at all. This because might is measured in terms of what one has. These kinds of scenarios are not strange to the twenty first century. It is no wonder then that there is a great rush to acquire all manner of deadly weapons. This is aimed at helping the concerned countries to be and remain dominant economically while at the same time maintaining their oppressive tendencies. There is a similarity between matters finance and the part in the novel where Tom is defended by Atticus with no success. Whenever there is a conference of the G8, several calls are made to address issues affecting Africa for instance. The calls are often made not just or worse still, not mostly by Africans themselves but by others who see the need for a fair ground in issues of trade and finance. However what happens is that these calls are rarely heard (Nickel, 2004). Even as the defense is done on behalf of the Africans, what is witnessed is a situation where Africans themselves do not have a lot of say in it. Where something is done, it still remains largely controlled by the mightier countries. If aid is given for instance, it is entirely controlled; Africans have no voice in it, mainly because these people are unable to do anything for themselves. As those who have visited most of the third world countries will tell you, the perception that has been created of these countries is totally false. There are problems there, just like in every other country, but those people are also warm and very kind hearted. Several people who visit any of the third world countries realize that they had been greatly mistaken, just like Scout did after visiting Boo. They realize that relying on what others say does not necessarily bring one to an objective end. Many people must have witnessed the oppositions that were seen in the past of attempts to elevate the status of the poor in the third world. There were those who argued that the people in those countries are simply unable to move up the ladder of prosperity because they are not good enough, intelligent enough, and are simply not human. These are not different from the treatment that the people of Maycomb gave to Scout and Jem when their father Atticus decided to defend Tom (Ray, 2001). These children were insulted and branded all sorts of names simply because they were standing on the opposite site of society. When Scout put herself in the shoes of Boo, she realized that this was a gentle man, filled with nice qualities that only a few actually have. Feeling that one is better than others can easily spark extreme forms of hatred. In every country, there exists a big gap between those who have and those who do not have wealth. This gap is seemingly alive, it grows inconstantly. In some areas the gap is greater than in others and in those areas there are higher levels of mistreatment of the less fortunate. This kind of financial injustice is in most cases brought about by unfair competition that is promoted by policies that favor the wealthy. In the United States for example, the trend has been that there are less opportunities for the colored people. These people are therefore found in areas that are less posh. The financial inequality encourages the sort of unequal consideration that is witnessed in all areas of life. Money, which is supposed to help improve the lives of all human beings, has become the worst form of alienation. The question remains as to whether there exists a Scout or a Jem or Atticus who can genuinely defend the disadvantaged at all costs, and ensure that the resources of the world are distributed in equitable manner. Atticus was a great icon, and a force to reckon with at a time when opposing authorities often attracted severe consequences. This however did little to stop him to fight for what he held to be the right thing. These kinds of people are very rare to find, because the world is highly materialistic. Every one is concerned about where they get their next meal. Sometimes people pretend to have the interest of these disadvantaged and instead use them as stepping ladders on their way up. This is very unfortunate because it is not very easy to differentiate between those with clear motivations from those whose aim is to earn a living out of the misfortune of others. This is done of course through the established funding system. It is therefore important that something be done in order to ensure that those who claim to be the contemporary Atticus do not end up pushing their selfish interests further with whatever is availed to help the poor. It remains to be seen however, whether this will ever be realized. As already mentioned, every society operates within certain framework of codes that have become acceptable over time as the way that all should follow.
