How is Swimwear Made?
Wearing swimwear is a lot of fun but many of us don't realise what goes into the making of our bathers
. Have you ever thought about how your swimsuit stays on? Why the material stretches but does not stretch out after a few uses? Why the water does not penetrate the bathing suit?
Generally, these specific pieces of clothing are used for swimming and lying out in the sun. There are many different designs such as the one piece or the world renowned bikini. Men also have their own style of bathing suit like the bikini briefs or "shortie-style" trunks.
History of Swimwear Fabrics
Swimming became very popular at the beginning of the 20th century. This called for more formalised swimwear with manmade fabrics that helped to promote swimming rather than to weigh down a swimmer.
The best material would be something that was flexible to allow the swimmer to move his or her body in any motion and elastic enough to allow comfort and breathing while being able to cling to the body. The first fabric used for swimwear was Rayon, then Lycra was created. However, these earlier renditions of the materials could not keep the shape of the design, nor the colour of the suit.
Nowadays, the most innovative material used for swimsuits, especially in the competitive arena, is called "Fastskin". This swimsuit material was developed by Speedo and modelled after a Sharks skin. Therefore, the material is sharklike and allows swimmers to swim faster which makes it perfect for those who are serious about their swimming.
Dying the Fabric
Another concern for swimwear when it is made, is how to colour it. The water and sun are two of the elements that damage fabric the most. So how do swimwear designers keep their amazing colours from fading from the sun and salt/fresh/chlorine water?
There are many different dying processes. Synthetic dyes are used to colour the swimsuit material but the application of these dyes vary. One way to dye a swimsuit fabric is to place the material in a combination of dye and water. Another application is placing a metallic solution onto the fabric and then the dye on top of the solution. The dye is then absorbed into the cloth.
Testing Swimsuits
The last step in making a swimsuit is the quality control. Can the suit perform under the different circumstances such as ongoing use and weather factors? There are many tests that are performed before a swimsuit is sold. There are tests for exposure to sunlight, stretching tests to see if the design can maintain its original shape and repeated washing of the suit in different types of water.
