How line bonding could make your broadband faster

How line bonding could make your broadband faster

A UK broadband providers has officially announced its line bonding product which it hopes will enable it to secure a foot in the superfast broadband marketplace.

From being the first ISP in the UK to launch ADSL2+, up to 24Mb broadband, the company has a reputation as being one of the consistently fastest broadband providers.

In the face of recent competition from providers who have both been investing heavily in their networks to being superfast services to UK customers, the company has remained quiet.

Now, though, it has launched line bonding - a faster ADSL service - but what is it?

Only half the UK population have access to fibre optic broadband deals currently so Line Bonding is the only superfast alternative.

Line Bonding, the company claims, offers fibre speeds and could also be a game changer for the millions of UK customers who suffer slower speeds because they live far away from the exchange.

Line bonding essentially glues two phone lines together, in theory providing faster speeds to the end user.

Despite claiming that a line bonding product is a real viable contender for the fastest broadband, however, there are a few hurdles to cross before it is fully embraced by members of the public stuck in the broadband slow lane.

The principal one is price.

Most people have one landline however, line bonding requires two phone lines to operate, this involves installation costs and a second lot of monthly line rental.

On top of that there is an 85 setup cost for most line bonding and a 65 per month charge for the service.

Secondly, if you currently receive broadband at around 15Mb and you can justify the cost then line bonding would be a great way to boost our speed up to around 30Mb, especially if there are no plans to bring any other superfast services to your area.

However, if you only receive 2Mb or less, then line bonding won't even give you a broadband connection on which you could reliably watch an HD programme on BBC iPlayer for example.

So despite BE's insistence that their line bonding product could be "life changing" for anyone who lives a long way from the local exchange, some experts disagree.

BE shouldn't qualify their comments about this being a great product for anyone living far from the exchange. Line bonding only gives you a broadband speed which can justify the cost if you currently get broadband which is at least 10Mb which might well be the case even with a big provider such as Virgin or sky.
