How to Achieve a Successful Horse Sale!
Buying a horse is like trying to find a life partner on a first date. Some manage it, most don't.
Like dating, some simple rules make the process easier, cheaper and more effective! As seller, you're the dating agency.
BE HONEST
Buyers need a realistic impression of your horse. What is your horse like now? Be clear, promoting your horse's good points (e.g. temperament, endurance).
Presentation is vital. If a buyer expects to see a fine-tuned athlete, your horse should look the part: they might not leave the car if your horse's mane is unkempt!
Be completely open about:
- behaviour that can cause serious injury (bolting, rearing or bucking);
- chronic problems / soundness issues, including arthritis or laminitis.
Covering up is poor practice. You'll get your money but 'the truth will out' and your reputation will be tarnished.
HAVE A PRICE
Would you buy a car from a dealer who wouldn't tell you the price? Doubtful. Set your price and tell buyers. Buyers will contact you if the price is realistic and they know what to expect before they phone.
BE POLITE
Have your horse ready on time. If you sell your horse, inform other interested parties as soon as you receive the money. If a potential buyer wants a couple of days to think, let them. You may blow the sale if you hound them!
However, if the buyer isn't right for your horse or you are uncomfortable about them as a potential owner, be honest and tell them (politely) straight away.
VARIETY IS KEY
To create buyer confidence offer to show your horse in a number of locations. Ask the buyer what they are planning to do with their purchase. If they only want to hack prioritise showcasing hacking-out.
Also, ask the buyer what they want to see the horse do. Plan how to cover this, from most to least familiar, over several visits:
1. First visit - show your horse where you are both most comfortable (usually at home). Showcase what the horse does best.
2. Second visit - add variety. Include things you are working on. This shows the buyer how well the horse learns.
3. Third visit - offer to take the horse to another venue (e.g. local horse club grounds).
VET CHECK
Expect the buyer to request a vet check. Suggest it yourself so there is no come back later.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT
Presenting your horse well for sale is essential. When advertising, make sure photos are a fantastic representation of your horse today. Advertising basics include:
1. take off rugs for photos
2. trim excess hair and brush
3. video footage is best (6 times more interest generated than without).
