How to Apply to a University Without an Agent

The first and most important task for prospective students is to research and make choices about universities and courses. Generally, you have to make the most of your school/college holidays to get as much information as possible. Internet research is the first thing to do but better still would be to visit the universities of interest, if travelling is an option. If not, try to ask your friends in the country of destination to do it for you. There are also various open days, conferences and fairs which provide another chance to meet university representatives. At this stage it also makes sense to talk to a friend or relative who has .experience of studying abroad.

When the university and course are selected it is time for careful self-assessment. Check university requirements against your current qualifications: Do you need to take a foundation course? Is your English level high enough for the chosen course? Do you have the right and valid certificate? You have checked everything and all match the requirements? Very good, now check again! It is difficult to get news more disappointing than being turned down by a university due to a missing tiny detail after months and months of waiting, preparations and dreams..

You are now ready to fill in the application form. Make sure you meet the application deadline. For example in the UK applications to almost 300 universities are made through UKAS system and deadline may vary depending on the course and institution. If you are interested in a part-time course you will need to contact universities individually to find out how to apply. Be very careful when filling in the application form, ensure you provide all necessary information and submit all required documents. It would be good to do it with someone who has already applied to an education institution so that they could help you to check the application form before you submit it.

Now wait, it takes time to process applications. The average waiting period is about 4 weeks but it depends on the course and university and sometimes may be considerably longer. Quite often we come across situations where we have to contact universities to follow up on applications. Therefore an email and/or a phone call to the admission department of the university may be needed in some cases.

Congratulations! You have received a conditional offer. This means that the university has reserved a place for you, but you have to meet certain requirements for your offer to become unconditional. Quite often (but not always) there are two conditions: an English language test (for example IELTS) and a deposit of tuition fees. If you have not done it yet, do a research for an IELTS testing centre to book the exam. Do you need an IELTS preparation course? Or an English course first? Have the answers to these questions well in advance. Ask your friends for advice on preparation courses. When it is all behind and the certificate is in hand you will need to forward it to the university and arrange for the payment of fees. Contact your bank with the account details of the university exactly as it is written in the payment instruction.

Upon receiving the unconditional offer you need to start your visa application (if you require one). Spend the time left before you travel to learn about the country of destination, its culture and traditions as much as you can. Be prepared to the different way of life people may lead in the country you are travelling to. Ask your friends or get a professional consultation about practicalities of life abroad. Remember: even positive emotions may be difficult to handle when you get many of them at once, especially in the new country.

We, of course, do not claim it as a comprehensive guide to follow, these are just some of the points to pay attention to on the path of a university application. What was interesting for me here is that all the mentioned is done by our advisers for FREE? Not only. Sometimes it is even cheaper than applying directly to universities (for example many of our universities in the USA will be cheaper through us). From this I can only come to a conclusion that it is possible to apply to a university without a professional adviser, it just does not make sense! Or DOES IT?
