How to Approach PPC
Any IM marketer will tell you they've heard of PPC advertising
, and even for those who "do it," they'll probably tell you they don't know everything about it. There's a good chance all marketers think about doing it when they're thinking of how they can make more money. Unfortunately, for many, PPC remains a largely mysterious form of advertising.
Our impression is that it's attractive to many marketers, but people have heard so many stories about how dangerous it can be with losing money if you're not careful, etc. Many marketers wonder if it's a good choice for them. How can you succeed with something that so many others have failed with? Let's talk about how you can do this in a manner that will help you succeed, rather than fail.
On the one hand, you don't want to overspend on unprofitable campaigns; on the other hand, it can be worthwhile to spend money if the campaign is doing well. You have to consider the value of your bids; some keywords will always cost more than others.
The fact is, however, that it's worth it to bid on expensive keywords as long as you are still making a good profit. You can't look at the cost of the campaign by itself; as long as you are taking in more money than you are putting out, you can call the campaign successful. It's a simple formula, really; if your profits are higher than your expenses, you are doing well. On the other hand, if the case is reversed, then you have to start doing things differently. To do well at PPC, it helps to watch what other sellers are doing. Your competitors can provide you with valuable information. Which ads are you seeing over and over again? By watching this, you can figure out which of their compaigns are producing the best results. Look for products and services that allow you to track or "spy" on other peoples' PPC campaigns. These are definitely worth using. Who is successful and what are they doing? Which campaigns are profitable and which ones quickly disappear? There is no easier way to succeed with pay per click than to simply model your own campaigns after those that are already successful. Don't copy it, of course, but let it be your inspiration!
You should always, always be testing everything including your ads, of course. The ads in PPC are very short, so you won't have much to work with in order to get people's attention. So you'll need to very quickly get attention and persuade them to click on your ad. The search engines have a built in ability to test ads, so you can find out which ad has the best conversion rate. This will help you with your future campaigns because you'll become a better ad writer.
If you just throw money into your campaigns without much thought, PPC can be costly. If you pay attention to your campaigns, however, and do the right research, you can figure out ways to profit from PPC in almost any niche. It is certainly possible to succeed. Fortunes have been made using this method alone. Get your feet wet by starting small until you are comfortable with the process. As you learn and gain experience, your campaigns will become more profitable!
