How to Build Muscle - The Most Common Myths About Abs And How To Really Get Them

There are all sorts of myths and misinformation being thrown around not just on the web but also offline, and here we are going to dispel some of the most common and popular of these. In addition, you will also be learning here what really goes into getting six pack abs.

Let's begin with the myths...

Myth #1 - Ab exercises will get you six pack abs.

This has been accepted and believed by many people as a basic and common knowledge. Many people believe that doing ab exercises (such as crunches) will rid them of their problematic and unsightly midsection. But contrary to popular belief, this is not true. Ab exercises alone do not give you those most sought after six packs.

There's a very good chance that you are also quite surprised to have read what you just did. Allow me to explain...

Chances are, 95% of people will not get six pack abs just from doing ab exercises. The reason why many people don't have six pack abs in the first place is because there's a layer of fat covering their abs. And doing ab exercises alone is not enough to take that layer of fat away. In order to get visible six pack abs you need to get rid of that layer of fat. And the only way that you will be able to do that is to watch what you eat and do more cardio exercises (and not do ab exercises).

Try pinching any part of where your abs are supposed to be. Before doing so, make sure to press your fingers into your skin with a considerable amount of pressure. Now, take a look at how much flesh you have between your fingers. What you got there is basically the amount of fat you have covering your abs.

You will only get those elusive six packs once you rid yourself of that fat. And, like I mentioned earlier, the only way you can do that is to watch what you eat and do more cardio exercises. No amount of ab workout will shed that layer of fat, not if you do them for 8 minutes each day, not if you do them for an hour a day.

If you've seen programs that promise you six pack abs by doing their recommended exercises for just a few minutes a day, there's a very good chance that there's a fine print somewhere that says you also need to do a bunch of other things before you can achieve the results they promise you. And it's very likely that those other things include doing lots of cardio workouts.

Another thing why ab workouts alone will not get you those six packs is the fact that you cannot spot reduce. There's no way in the world you can lose fat in select/specific areas of your body. That's totally impossible.

Although it's true that fat deposits (in specific areas of the body) differ in amount from person to person--like one person may have more fat deposits in his/her legs and less on his/her tummy and another person may have more fat on his/her tummy but lesser fat in his/her legs--you cannot decide/dictate where your body will shed more fat from. All you can do instead is to reduce your overall body fat and your body will decide where the fat comes off.

I've seen people who do 50 minutes of leg raises in the mistaken idea that they can rid of the fat in their midsection. That's just ridiculous. If you are one of those people who think like that, you would be much better off doing 50 minutes of jogging or cycling rather than hanging leg raises.

Myth #2 - To get abs you need to buy something.

If getting abs were as easy as buying something, everyone would have them. I'm sure you'll agree with me on that one.

There's no end to these expensive, not to say ridiculous schemes for getting abs easily. But notice how all of them give you the false idea that you can get visible six pack abs with minimal effort.

These things vary from the low tech to the high tech. Some low-tech examples are the "fat suits" which are basically just plastic suits that you wear to make you sweat. In case you don't know, sweating doesn't mean that you are losing fat. As a matter of fact, sweating has nothing at all to do with losing fat.

Another low-tech example are those old wall-mounted belt vibrators that women would lean against and shimmy their tush while they read a magazine or blow dry their hair. Back in the 50s, people actually believe that those things can rid them of fat.

An example of the high tech products are those expensive electro-stimulation devices which make your muscles twitch. The companies that sell them claim that the twitching is equivalent to the work that your muscles do when you're actually doing your workout. That's just outrageous!

Then there are the pills, the newsletters, the books, and all the other things that you see being advertised on magazines, on websites, and on the home TV shopping channel.

Some things you need to work really hard to get, and a washboard ab is one of those. It's actually very simple, it's just that it takes a great amount of dedication.

Myth #3 - Lower abs require special exercises.

People often get a four-pack up on top and they want to know what special exercises they need to do to develop an eight-pack.

Thing is, there are no special exercises for lower abs. Like I said earlier, to be able to see all those packs, all you have to do is to lose most, if not all of the fat that's on your tummy. Period. If you are only seeing a four-pack or a two-pack, that means you still have some fat that you need to take care of.

The thing is our belly is the first region where fat is stored and it's the last place it comes off of. So you have to get really lean for the fat to come off of your midsection. Additionally, we typically have more fat stored in the lower part of our belly than in the upper part. So, you need to work extra hard to get the fat level low enough for your ab muscles to show through on your entire abs section.

The root of all these myths lies in the fact that people have this misconception that ab exercises are cardio exercises. They're not. Cardio vascular exercises are exercises that elevate your heart rate into the weight loss zone. These are exercises that involve doing something really strenuous with your big muscles (like the quads in your legs) like jogging, running, or cycling.

The abs are really small compared to your leg muscles and there's no way you could possibly get your heart rate in the weight loss zone just by doing ab exercises.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying that ab workouts are totally useless. They are actually very important as they give you a strong core and reduce your chances of suffering lower back injuries. All I'm saying here is that they won't get you that six-pack that you've been dreaming of having.

Now that you know the myths, you know what you need to do.
