How to Choose a Baby Monitor
Baby monitors have become a piece of baby safety equipment that is found in the majority of houses that are home to children
. Parents naturally worry about their children and a baby monitor is one way of easing concerns when your baby is out of sight.
The first thing to know when choosing a
baby monitor is the different types of baby monitors available as this will affect the way in which you use your baby monitor.
The first type of baby monitor that is available is also the most commonly used. The
audio baby monitor as you might expect monitors solely the noises that you child makes and comes in a variety of designs form different manufacturers. Some audio baby monitors need to be connected to a power socket and some audio baby monitors can operate on batteries wirelessly.
The second type of baby monitor currently produced is a video baby monitor, much like an audio monitor it tracks the noises that your baby makes but also has the added bonus of being able to see your baby too. As with audio monitors some video devices are wireless and some require a mains socket connection.
The last type of baby monitor that is widely used is a baby movement monitor, unlike both of the above; the movement monitor does not track the noises your baby makes but the movements. Baby movement monitors set off an alarm if the device does not pick up movement such as breathing for a certain period of time usually around 20 seconds.
The main difference in terms of use of the three different types of baby monitors is where you plan to use them. If you have a large house and your nursery is a reasonable distance from your main living area or own bedroom a video monitor will save you unnecessary trips but usually costs slightly more than a standard audio monitor. Some audio monitors also come complete with movement monitors.
Once you have decided on the type of baby monitor that you would like you need to consider the individual models of baby monitors. The first function to note is the range of a the monitor, if you live in a small house or only need to monitor your baby from a few rooms away then the majority of baby monitors will do the job. For those with larger homes or who wish to monitor their baby from the garden or further away it is advisable look for a monitor with a longer range.
Some baby monitors can suffer from interference and therefore if you are in a built up area where there are likely to be other baby monitors, go for a multi channel baby monitor to limit the interference.
