STEP A : Choosing a ring would be the hard part but not the expensive part. There are hundreds of thousands of designs in the market ranging from 100$ to 2000$ approximately.

The most common ring materials are Gold (Yellow or White) and Platinum. Some cheaper rings can be found made of Sterling silver or Titanium. One needs to remember that there are different purities of gold which are 10K , 14K , 18K or 24K gold. The higher the carat the more pure the gold is and thus more expensive.

STEP B : Choosing a diamond would be quite simple once a budget is decided upon. The diamonds are first categorized by carat which is their weight ( 1 carat is 1/5 a gram ) . The carats range between 0.2- 3.5 ct. . Every diamond has 2 characteristics which affect its price significantly, color and clarity. It would be very easy to find indexes of these values online but normally an average diamonds colors would be between D to G and the Clarity would normally be between S1 to I1.

The last step would be to make sure your jeweler can be trusted. It is recommended to make sure the diamonds will come with an authenticity certificate and to make sure your package is insured, the last thing that you would want is your engagement ring delayed or getting lost in the mail after it has already been paid for. It is also very likely you would need to have your ring cleaned or the ring size modified , you should check whether the retailer you are purchasing from will provide such services free of charge.
