How to Choose a Nail Salon in a College Town

When I was a college student in Oneonta, NY, I was faced with a challenge that a lot of young women are faced with - How to choose a nail salon when you don't know anything about any of the salons in town.

Back home, you probably had a lot of friends who could give you recommendations for your home town. You might have even gone to the same salon that your mom did. But as a freshmen in a college town, I didn't know anyone except other freshmen, and their guess was as good as mine.

The internet wasn't as prevalent when I was a student, but today you can get a lot of hints from it. You can google, say "Oneonta nail salons" and if you're lucky, some salons will come up and you can check them out. I did just that when I was doing research for this article.

I googled "Oneonta Nail Salons", but unfortunately almost none of the salons have websites. (Not very professional, I'd say.)

But, fortunately there is a solution. There are directories on the internet that "scrape" the internet for contents, and there are a lot of them that search for local businesses. The online Yellow Pages is an example. Or Merchant Circle. These directories also allow people to make comments, ratings and recommendations about local businesses.

So when searching for information on local nail salons in a town that is new to you, you can really trust sites like those more than a site that was put up by the owner of the salon. If you don't see a lot of listings for nail salons when you search with a search engine like Google, you can go straight to the directories themselves. Here is a partial list of directories that you can search through:

Local.com

You can see that is a good start. You can use this strategy for anything you need to know about a new town. It works perfect for nail salons, though. You can get not only ratings, but very personal opinions about people's actual experience with nail salons in a town. These will be personal recommendations by people who've actually used the services. It's almost like asking a friend for a recommendation.

Give it a try. You'll get a lot of insight into the quality and the service of local nail salons.

Don't forget to rate the salon you chose, and leave comments on one of the directories to help out your college sisters.
