How to Clean Up Cat Urine
Having a cat is great until they start urinating in places you don't want them to. The problem with cat urine is that it smells horrible, if allowed to sink into whatever they urinated on then you won't be able to get rid of the smell unless you get rid of the object. So how do you clean it up?
Look for where that cat went, if it was on hardwood or linoleum then just wipe it up and disinfect quickly. If you find it before it dry's you will be able to clean it up easily. If you don't clean it up properly on hardwood flooring then you will have sand and reseal that area, so disinfect it well.
Cleaning up cat urine on carpet or other upholstery is a pain. First blot up as much as you can from the area. If the mess is on the carpet take the towel and press down with all your weight. Try to avoid using paper towels; if you have a sacrificial towel, it is best to use that, cloth diapers work the best.
Once you have gotten as much urine as possible out and washed the area thoroughly use a powdered cleaner or baking soda. If you have a fragrant powder it will help with the smell. Leave the powder on for as long as possible, a couple hours is optimal, then vacuum it up.
Next you want to get rid of as much of the smell as possible, open all your windows and pull out all your fans. Turn all your fans to face the windows in order to suck all the bad air out. Find all your candles and light them up. The most effective scents are citrus and pine.
After you have vacuumed up the powder you will need bacteria killing cleaners. Once you find them, apply to the stain as the directions say to. This will start the process of breaking down the stain and the smell. If you are getting ready for guests and your process is time sensitive you might want to throw something decorative over the stain.
Cat urine is not easy to get rid of, in fact some say without getting rid of the affected item the smell never goes away. Start looking around and ask yourself why the cat went inside the house. Make sure the litter box is accessible and private. Also ensure that you have removed the odor, or else the cat will regularly go there. Don't use any ammonia based products while cleaning. A balance of good cleaning and prevention methods will be great with owning a cat.
