How to Clean and Take Care of Your Diamond Engagement Ring

Like any expensive investment, it is important to take care of a diamond engagement ring. There are numerous different ways to clean jewelry, but most of them are only partially effective. In fact, many of the at home cleaning solutions will leave a layer of gunk on the diamond and make it look dull. The best way to care for your diamond ring is to take it to a jeweler and have him clean and polish the ring. However, in between visits to the jeweler, here are a few suggested options that will help maintain your ring's appearance and shine.

As a general rule, when using these options, the goal is to remove all dirt and debris from the ring and by extension, the diamond as well without damaging any part of it. Obviously, more elaborate pieces require extra care, while simple rings can be cleaned quickly and easily. However, before cleaning, you should first check to see if the diamond engagement ring can be cleaned at home. If the metal can not be identified, then it is best to take it to a jeweler. The same rule applies if the ring is an heirloom or an antique so that the ring does not get ruined. Once you have determined this, proceed with the steps below.

You should set up a cleaning space with a towel and bright lighting in an area away from a sink or drain. This is important because the towel will keep corrosive chemicals such as bleach and chlorine away from your jewelry, the bright lighting will allow you to see all areas of the ring easily, even areas such as the setting and the most important thing, not being near a drain, sink or garbage can, because it would be an absolute shame to lose a diamond ring down a sink or drain.

Once your cleaning area is set up, the first step you should take is to remove any hairs or fibers stuck in the prongs. It is a good idea to use tweezers for this step and especially in tight areas around the ring, such as in the setting. Following this, you should rinse your diamond ring under running water or soak it in a bowl. Soaking your jewelry in a bowl is the more intelligent choice as you won't risk losing your jewelry down the sink. If you want to use running water, put your rink in a sieve that is deep enough that the ring won't fall out. The next step you should take is to actually clean the ring.

When cleaning your diamond ring, the best solution to use is a solution that is mostly water with a bit of ammonia (use three times more water than ammonia), along with a mild detergent or a professional cleaner. These other detergents should be diluted with water. You may soak the ring if you wish, but it would be prudent to watch the ring so as to avoid ruining it. However, if your diamond ring has a diamond that is fractured, do not use ammonia as this chemical will cloud and remove the coating as well as ruin the filling. After this, you should scrub the ring with a soft brush, like a soft toothbrush, making sure to change angles often to as to clean thoroughly. Once your diamond ring is clean, rinse it thoroughly and carefully either with running water or a bowl of clean water. Again, if you wish to use running water, put it in a sieve. Once your diamond ring is clean, dry it with a lint-free cloth and while drying it, try to polish it as thoroughly as possible.

Two important notes to keep in mind are that if your diamond engagement ring contains other gemstones, you should use the cleaning agent that is appropriate for the weakest stone. The other thing to keep in mind is to keep your diamond engagement ring, or for that matter, any jewelry, away from corrosive agents such as chlorine because they will ruin jewelry.
