How to Clear Clogged Drains
The problem of clogged drains is faced by every household
. There can be many causes behind this and depending on how serious the problem is, you can either clear the drain yourself or you may need the professional rooter service of a reliable plumbing company.
What causes clogged drains?
Drains get clogged because of all the stuff that keeps entering them. Not everything that enters a drain can be washed away by water and some of the things keep accumulating until they form a clog, through which even water cannot pass. The objects that can cause a clog could be anything like hair, tree roots, soap scum, and if it is a kitchen drain, it could be scraps of food or oil. Whatever is making your drain clog, ultimately the drain would become completely unusable.
Clearing the drain with a plunger
There are many tools in the market that can be used to clear clogged drains. A plunger is one of the simplest options that you have. Make sure that you choose the right plunger depending on the size of the drain and how much strength will be needed to unclog it. A plunger creates a small vacuum, which helps in breaking the clog. By repeated thrusts, the broken up clog can be washed away. This solution will however not work for difficult clogs that have become hardened with time.
Using a plumbing snake
A plumber's snake is a flexible auger made of a coiled wire of metal. On the other end of the device, there is crank that can be used to rotate the wire as it is pushed down the drain. This downward and rotating movement works like a drill and helps break up the clog. You can either push the clog through the drain or draw it out depending on how solidified it is. Make sure that you use a plumbing snake of the right size, as the wrong plunger can also end up damaging the walls of the drain.
Using a power auger
A power auger works in a manner similar to a plumbing snake. The key difference is that here it is operated by a motor and offers much greater strength. This can be useful when you are trying to clear a very hard clog, which just can't be broken manually. This is not the job of an amateur, and you would need to hire a professional rooter service. Their expert plumbers will know how to use the device safely and efficiently so that the clog can be cleared without doing any damage to the plumbing system of your house.
A professional rooter service will also have other latest tools that can be used in drains that are difficult to access or where using the conventional tools could do serious damage to the drain. Once the drain has been cleared, you should follow some precautions to minimize the chances of the problem occurring again. Make sure that debris does not enter the drain easily and run hot water through the drain regularly to prevent clogs.
