How to Create a Good Navigation for Your Website
The website should have good navigation
The website should have good navigation. Without a good navigation, the visitors won't be able to find the content they are looking for. A good navigation structure allows the search engine to determine whiche which content is the most important to the webmaster. If you have a lot of pages, you should list the main categories on the homepage. In this way, the visitor can easily find their way to the pages under the different categories. If your site only has a few pages, you can list the links to them on the homepage. For example, if your site contains 5 pages, you can list them on the top of the site navigation.
To help visitors find the pages on your site, you can create a sitemap. The sitemap shows the structre of the pages on your website. It has a hierarchical listing of all the pages. It should contain the links to all the pages on your website. The links of the pages should be organized based on categories. The sitemap should be neat so that the visitor can easy find the pages they want. If your website only have one category, you can use alphabetical listing method to create the sitemap.
The site navigation you create should have a natural flowing hierarchy. It should be neat and organized so that the visitors is able to browse the content they are searching for. If you have hundreds of pages, you should avoid putting them together so that it looks like an endless list of navigation links. To avoid this problem, you can group together links to related pages. For example, you can create a related pages section on the page. Under the related pages, you can place links to pages with relevant content. It is best that you don't use flash or javascript to create the navigation. Javascript and flash can significantly slow down the user navigation. You should avoid relying entirely on navigation that is based on drop down menus, flash or animations. If you want to use flash or javascript, you should also include another text based navigation.
Breadcrumb navigation refers to a row of navigation links to the internal pages on top or below the page. The breadcrumb navigation allows users to easily navigate to the different section of the site. Most of the breadcrumb navigations contain links to the homepage as first. An example of breadcrumb links is Wedding Cake homepage > Wedding Cake Guides > How to Decorate a Wedding Cake.
In addition, you can include a HTML sitemap on the site. The sitemap is not a requirement for every site. However, adding sitemap allows the users to easily browse the content on the site. New users will have problem in navigating the pages on the site. When they have difficulty in finding the page they want, they can refer to the sitemap. The sitemap list all the internal links on the pages in hierarchical structure so that the visitor can easily find it.
