How to Create an Attribute Set in Magento

Magento Attribute Sets is a collection of Attributes. Only Attribute Sets can be assigned to a product (not attributes). If you would like to add a small number of Attributes, you can add them to the Default set, but if you want to add Attributes that will be applied only to a subset of products, it is advisable to create an Attribute Set for each set of Attributes that you would like to assign to products. Attribute Sets can inherit from each other, thus saving you from redefining sets of Attributes that apply to many different products.

Attributes are not applied directly to Products. They are first grouped into Attribute Sets, and then a set can be applied to a Product. This means that you will need to create a set for each different combination of Attributes in your store.

An attribute in Magento is defined as any property of a product. This includes product id, product title, SKU, images, description everything! Although this may seem a bit abstract, it's also one of the most powerful concepts in Magento and provides an almost limitless ability to control the products. You also don't need to add any columns to your database - it's all done automatically from the attributes manager. That's right - you just add the attribute from the admin, and you can start entering data for products using this new attribute.

Creating Attribute Set in Magento

Creating an attribute set in magento requires following steps

Go to admin panel and navigate to Catalog -> Manage Attribute Sets.

Click on Add New Set from top right corner.

Enter the name of Attribute set

Select attribute that will be the base of newly created attribute. Select Default for it

To assign attribute set to a product requires following steps

Navigate to Catalog -> Manage Products

Click on Add Product

Under Attribute Set, select newly created attribute set from drop down.

Click on Continue and new product will be assigned to that new attribute set.
