However, there's not much to worry about the condition is not serious you will soon be able to move about as usual, provided you undertake to do some home treatment.
There are many ways in which sciatica can be treated at home. If you presume that bed-rest is one of them, you may be not quite correct, because, in order to heal itself, this condition requires movement, contradictory as it may sound. Exercise plays a major role in the treatment of sciatica. Once the pain is relieved to an extent by massaging with any ointment containing methyl salicylate (Oil of wintergreen or st. John's wort oil), you are ready to take up a little exercise. Some of the exercises which you can do are described below:
1 Lie on your stomach and slowly try to raise the torso with the help of your elbows.
Hold this position for 5 seconds, relax and repeat 5 times, each time holding the position
for just a little longer. When doing this exercise, a slight stretch should be felt by you in the back.
2 Again lie on your stomach with your hands clasped on your lower back. Slowly raise your upper body off the ground, such that again you feel a slight stretch in the back. Hold the position for 5 seconds, relax and repeat 5 times, each time holding the position for a little longer.
Other exercises involving slight movement of the limbs are also prescribed for this condition.
Holding an erect posture is very important in the long-term treatment of sciatica. A slouching
posture puts unnecessary pressure on the spine, bringing about imbalance and pain.
A hot water bag applied over the affected area is a good remedy for sciatica. A hot water bath works similarly. It can in fact be made more effective, by adding stinging nettle leaf infusion to the water. 4 cups of stinging nettle leaves are soaked overnight, warmed and added to the hot bath water for a miraculous effect.
Your diet can be modified to include Vitamin B1 containing substances, such as green peas, lentil, beans, nuts, bananas, etc. Supplements of this vitamin or B-complex are also recommended. Celery leaf juice combined with potato juice 10 oz per day - is another option.
It does not take very long to cure the pain arising out of sciatica. If all the above home remedies are followed, one can be sure to be up and moving within a week to 10 days.
