It is known that acne develops in three stages. The first stage of acne, the mild stage is not difficult to treat. It is best to tackle the problem right when it is in this mild stage. The forms of acne as it progress beyond this stage are called as papule, pustule, nodule and cyst. A papule appears as a small solid elevated lesion. Usually these papule or lesions are of an average size of about 5 mm dia. Pustule is the next serious form. Pustule is a pus-filled bubble like formation containing dead cells of skin, white blood cells and bacteria. These pus bubbles are delicate and can easily get punctured. They are dome shaped with a hair in the middle when they sprout over a hair follicle. These pustules will later grow into a cyst. Nodule is an eruption of a lesion, extending to deeper skin layers. Its appearance is akin to a papule but its dome shape appears like a pustule. As acne progresses to the stage of nodules, your skin's inner tissues can get damaged resulting in permanent scars on the skin. Cyst is the severest stage of acne. Cyst is an ulcerous swelling that contains bacteria, dead skin cells and white blood cells. They are generally quite painful and can very badly damage the skin tissue.
