How to Deal With Breakup Depression by:Amy Wells
If you recently went through a breakup, no matter how amicable or low-key it was
, it is natural to feel depressed and upset. You may begin to feel like you are experiencing a loss or death and the feelings of breakup depression can be just as strong and overwhelming.
It is important to know the symptoms of breakup depression and learn how to tell when they have become serious enough that you should seek professional help. Often depression is brought on by a chemical imbalance in the brain, but a sudden and traumatic event can throw you off your mental equilibrium and have serious consequences.
Symptoms of depression can include fatigue, irritability, a loss of interest in activities that you used to enjoy and interruptions in your sleep. You may also experience a loss of hunger and a feeling that nothing will ever change or get any better. Many people have felt these things at some points in their life but if the feelings are very strong and begin to interfere with your normal life, or you are beginning to have thoughts of taking drastic measures or harming yourself, you need to seek professional help.
If you have a friend who has recently gone through a break up and they seem to be completely different from their former self, you can be right to worry. You should watch for the signs and symptoms listed above and make sure that your friend is taking care of themselves. It can be hard to tell the signs of depression from normal feelings of loss and upset that usually go along with a breakup.
If you or someone you know is suffering from a severe or debilitating case of breakup depression, there are several different ways to go about dealing with the problem. Your first step should be to seek medical care so that the condition can be treated and the proper treatment can be prescribed. This can include counselling or even medication. If you are prescribed medication you should not feel bad about it. There are many people who have used anti-depressants in order to get through a hard time like a breakup.
If you are suffering from breakup depression you should not feel bad about seeking out your friends for support to help you get through this hard time. If old activities no longer seem like fun, think about new ones. Is there a class or a club that you have always wanted to take part in? Look at ways to get out of the house and that will help keep your mind off of your situation. Exercise can be a wonderful way of working off stress. You can get healthier at the same time you are working through your issues and the knowledge that you look better than you did when you were in the relationship can be a powerful and healthy way of getting revenge on your ex.
Breakup depression does not need to keep you in the house and locked in despair. By identifying the signs and getting professional help, as well as finding new activities to take up your free time you can emerge from your breakup a stronger and more confident person.
