How to Deal with Toddler Misbehavior

Misbehaving is very natural for kids, especially toddlers. Unlike full- grown adults, kids see the world and their body as an experiment, and they want to keep trying new things just to see how it will go. This leads them to jump up down the bed, crawl underneath the table or throw food on the floor. More often than not, children behave according to how their body commands them to be. That is, to run around and never rest. Kids don't misbehave because they want to but because the misbehavior is an effect of how active they are. Kids going through the terrible twos are a lot harder to handle than older kids. This is because kids two to three years old have just come to know what independence is. They want to dress or eat on their own, but don't have well-developed skills to do these things yet. If you have a toddler at home, it's time that you teach them how to behave properly. Here are two excellent tips on how to do this without spanking or hitting your child. Tip #1 RedirectionThere are times when your child plays with something that they shouldn't play with, such as dad's watch, for example. Instead of grabbing the watch and starting a power play, the parent can actually redirect the child's attention. What you can do is to give the child another toy (such as a stuffed toy or a ball) in exchange for the watch. The trick is to show the child the toy and give it to him while slowly sliding the watch out of his hands. Doing this results in a win-win situation for both parties. The parent doesn't have to grab anything from the child (making him cry) and the child doesn't get to ruin daddy's watch. Tip#2 Use of Logical ConsequenceTeaching your child that there is a consequence for every action will be one of the most important lessons you can ever teach him. This is something that he'll get to use even when he grows into an adult. This type of discipline uses a very simple concept, misbehave and you'll be disciplined.Let's say your child throws food on the floor. Instead of screaming in frustration or keeping your silence when you are in fact mad at what your child has done, you can have him help you clean the mess. We all know a toddler can't clean the floor yet, but giving him a broom or a napkin to "help" pick up the morsels of food will teach him that when you throw food on the floor there are consequences. If you don't want to clean the floor, then don't throw food on it. This is a discipline method used by a lot of new parents, and studies have shown that it is in fact very helpful in disciplining a misbehaving child.
