However, as many major home improvements go, it can be a costly venture. The great news is that it doesn't have to be so, and finding ways to decrease the cost of granite countertops in your home can be relatively easyif you have the time and patience to do it right.

Do your homework.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is to jump into working with a particular contractor. Make sure you shop arounduse the wonderful power of Google to find a good deal of contractors in your area. Then compare prices. Be very specific about the job you're looking to do before you call. If you have detailed measurements of your counters, then you can get an accurate price assuming the contractors already have granite in the color you are looking for. Remember that though contractors do not supply stone that they have a great bearing on the cost of granite countertops that will be installed in your home.

Do more homework.

Educate yourself on the distribution process that goes on when purchasing your countertops. As mentioned, a contractor obviously does not supply stone. Ask contractors about the distributors that they use, or better yet, look into some local distributors yourself. Don't be afraid to ask questionsthere may be a larger margin that a contractor is taking and you don't even know it. Look into remnants.

Though most kitchen counters require that you use an entire slab of granite (or more), bathroom counters and vanities, on the other hand, do not.
