Designing a printed circuit board-PCB, involves 11 steps.
Having your final design: the very first thing you need to have is a finalized circuit design without which you cannot make a PCB.
Select PCB software to use for designing: most of the time, engineers do not have the ability to choose which design software they would like to use. This is because the company for whom they work already has a software design package. It should be kept in mind however that the software being used should be one which is easy to work with and can complete the whole process.
Get a schematic: in the modern day today, the circuit is going to be captured electronically from the beginning of the design process. This process refers to every component being drawn electronically and then being interconnected.
Component foot print: once you have completed the schematic, you would have to draw the outline of every component. These will then be put on the PCB in copper and then be soldered on to the wiring board.
Establishing the PCB outline: this is your fifth step. Since every project is likely to have restrictions as far as the outline is considered, you need to use this step to determine the outline of every component.
Rules of design: when you reach this stage, you would be done with the outline and foot printing of the printed circuit board. All that is required now is the placement however before you carry out the placement procedure, you need to come up with a set of designing rules which you can then apply to the design of the PCB.
Placing components: this step requires all the components to be placed on to the printed circuit board. This process is one which needs to be done slowly in order to ensure perfection.
Manual route trace: it is absolutely essential that you route the important traces manually.
Automatic router: if you prefer using an automatic router, you will definitely save up on time however you would have to follow a large set of rules.
Checking the design: all software's come with a package which allows you to check your design. This will help you in fixing any error which may be present.
Gerber files: once you have ensured that the PCB is without any error, you can output the Gerber file. These files are what enable a manufacturer to be able to print your PCB.
