How to Dig a Hole for a Mass Tower

Telecommunication service is an infrastructure dependent industry that relies on an array of installations and equipment. Like most utilities, telecommunication involves a great deal of remote setup spread through vast expanses of geographical coverage areas.

One of the important components of modern telecommunication is towers and high masts which are used extensively for wireless communication. These towers, which are situated within visual line of sight from each other, are made sufficiently tall so that they rise above the usual city skyline and communicate with each other without any hurdles in between.

Construction of firm base for telecom towers

Telecom towers need to stand tall against the forces that tend to destabilize it. These forces include the tower and the equipment's own weight. The tower also needs to bear shearing forces exerted by strong winds. Rainfall and snow settle on the tower elements and tend to add nominal weight to the structure too.

In case of guyed tower construction, the guy cables exert a downward force owing to their tensile property, as they hold the tower against a particular direction.

Holes for foundation of towers

The base of telecom towers usually have a concrete block with a firm foundation dug into the ground where it is erected. In case of smaller towers, the holes for the foundation can be dug manually. This works fine, particularly in areas where manual labor is readily available.

However, with the increasing size of the telecom tower, the holes need to be as per few design considerations and would require a deeper haul. Specially, self-supporting telecom tower designs require deeper foundations. The task would require the help of earth moving equipments such as a backhoe, with skilled operators guiding the whole activity. The operator would need to ensure that the hole is dug in a conspicuous area without disturbing the neighboring area.

The right amount of earth needs to be excavated to ensure that the rest of the base stays firm and rules out any possibility of a landslide or erosion. If the hole is dug larger than what is required, you also end up spending more for concrete to fill up the hole, which would directly impact your project cost.
