How to Dress for Halloween Success

Once upon a time Halloween costumes were about as novel as form letters

. You cut holes in a sheet and plopped it over your head. Bam, ghost. You stuck plastic teeth in your mouth and a cape on your back. Instant vampire. You trudged over to a house, extorted pieces of candy, and hoped to hell there wasn't candy corn or razor blades, in that order. You gathered intel on the house with the best candy, and scoffed at urban legends that some old lady was passing out crisp dollar bills. Then, over time, Halloween became something less about the kids and more about the adults. Costumes began to get creative. The prerequisite that a costume had to be scary was thrown out the window. It wasn't so much about wearing a costume as it was wearing a disguise, and the more creative this transformation the better. Then Halloween became more of a competition. The person with the best costume would earn the most kudos, be king or queen for a day.

A good Halloween costume is a reflection of yourself. It is a shining, neon sign, bigger than any Facebook page or self-aggrandizing twitter post. It can provide you with an opportunity to be creative, be fun, and divulge a little about your identity in the process. It can also give you an opportunity to be someone else, to play the role of your favorite television star, athlete, or superhero, or show a side of yourself that others wouldn't expect. Halloween costumes can be topical, hilarious, or sexy. The first decision you have to make is whether you want to go for laughs, sex appeal, or nostalgia, and what genre or subculture you want to go for.

For example, fans of video games often wear costumes of iconic video game characters. If you have a friend, you can do correlating outfits such as Mario and Luigi. Fans of television might dress up as characters from a Lost or Mad Men, or various celebrities, with extra points if they have been involved in a recent scandal for you to exploit. Really, it can be any number of things, from internet memes to inside jokes, but the key is to know your target audience. Insensitive jokes like say, the zombie of a recently deceased person, are a good way to garner attention and generate laughs, but you always run the risk of too much too soon. Even still, crossing the line is integral in both comedy and exposure, and making people cringe might be exactly what you're striving for.

The key of course, is to be topical. Whereas most things in life you seek to construct things that will have some permanence, Halloween comes around every year, and costumes are meant to be ephemeral.
