Are you having a problem with constipation? Everybody gets it, whether it's every blue moon or on very regular basis. 1. Oh those tasty fast foods. These foods typically lack sufficient fiber. Due to the volume of fast foods we all eat, this is the biggest cause of constipation. We have been programmed by the marketing industry (almost brainwashed really) into believing if we are hungry we need to eat something that tastes good and do it on the runwhether it's healthy or not. Combine that with the fact that we all live busy lives, running from one obligation to the next, it's no wonder we eat so much on the run. We get "full" stomachs but not near enough fiber to digest that stuff in our digestive system. That's a problem.

2. Not enough water. People will drink a variety of beverages, deceiving themselves into thinking that they are adequately hydrated. If I tell you I drank 17 colas today and am not thirsty, would I be hydrated? No, actually I would be dehydrated. The entire body needs water to function; your organs, your mental and bodily functions, skin, etc. So if you are dehydrated, your rectum will actually steal any moisture from the stool you are trying to pass thereby causing MUCH discomfort in attempting to go to the bathroom. Therefore, you must drink a minimum of a half gallon of water each day.

3. A laid back lifestyle. When people don't exercise enough, they are susceptible to developing an environment for constipation. Ask a doctor for his/her opinion on exercise and it's relation to easing constipation and it will be part of the "relief" equation. Movement equals movement.

4. Pregnancy. Due to the hormonal changes throughout a woman's body and the fact that a baby is sitting directly on the intestines causes her to experience bouts of constipation.

Now let's look at some of the ways we can alleviate constipation.


1. Eat plenty of fiber. Dietary fiber can be absorbed through the body by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. At the same time, you would want to cut back on the amount of dairy and meat products. This may be difficult for some people so adding fiber supplements to the diet can be beneficial to the digestive system.

To develop a routine takes changing one's mindset of eating habits. Instead of going through a drive through at a fast food restaurant, take some fruit with you in a small cooler so it stays fresh. It provides fiber, vitamins, minerals, energy producing carbohydrates. WARNING: for those individuals who are diabetic or other known physical related conditions, please seek the counsel of your physician.

Taking in fibers should not be done in large amounts initially. Allow your digestive system time to adapt by gradually increasing your fiber intake and your digestive tract will be happy and so will you!
