How to Ensure Home Security in Hurricane Season

People in different climates need to consider how the weather of the region they live in affects their home security

. For those who live in the Southeast of the United States (roughly Washington DC through the Carolinas to Georgia and Florida) and the Gulf Coast (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and eastern Texas) need to prepare for hurricane season. (Those who live on the coast of the Northeast might want to prepare for milder storms as well, although some big ones can make it up north as well). According to the National Hurricane Center, a government agency, this season occurs from June 1st and ends on November 30th of every year. It is when hurricanes are the most likely to strike. While many of these hurricanes really act more like big rainstorms, a devastating few can wreck complete havoc on an area. Obviously there are major events like Hurricane Katrina that garner national, and international, attention. But there are also a lot of somewhat smaller events that happen each year that can devastate individual homes and communities, and so residents should remain alert. Obviously there is nothing you can do to change the weather, but you can always do more to ensure your home security in the event of a major storm. Here are some tips as to what to do to prepare your house for hurricane season.

1. Contact your local government.

Towns that are located in hurricane country will often have specific guides and protocols as to what to do to ensure the individual home security of residents in the community. They might have a highly organized evacuation plan, or they might know of regulations for things like putting up boarding to protect windows in a storm. You might also be able to be put on some kind of special alert or list, so that you will be automatically be contacted with weather updates in the event of an oncoming storm.

2. Purchase homeowner's insurance, and make sure it covers hurricanes and flooding.

Many people are looking to cut corners these days because of the economy, and they do not want to spend money on expenses they deem frivolous or unnecessary. But homeowner's insurance is not a luxury it is a necessity. If your house were to experience a robbery, catch on fire, or be located on the destruction path of a hurricane, everything would be lost without it. It is an essential part of home security in this day and age. Just make sure that the homeowner's plan that you have actually covers hurricanes and post-hurricane flooding!

3. Create an emergency kit.

In the odd chance that you could end up unable to evacuate before a major storm, you may find yourself in need of some basic supplies to tide you and your family over while wait for rescue crews to come find you. This is a situation that many victims of Hurricane Katrina found themselves in. So pack a survival kit think items like flashlights and batteries, bottled water, and non perishable food items like canned goods (just make sure to include at least one can opener and a knife as well).
