The growing need for and wide spread use of USB devices meant signals now have to be extended over longer distances. Extender devices consist of two units, a local unit which connects to the host computer and a remote unit which connects to the USB device. USB extenders are perfect for extending USB signals over extremely long distances. Despite their capability there is no need for an external power supply and are easy to install.

USB signals can also be extended using wireless technology. Wireless USB is used for short range high bandwidth wireless devices such as game controllers, digital cameras, mobile phones but can also be used with larger equipment like printers and scanners. Signals can be sent at a rate of 480Mbit/s over a length of up to 3m while rates decrease to 110Mbit/s when the length is increase to over 10m. Wireless USB is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The main advantage of wireless USB is that there is no need for hubs or wires and therefore installation and presentation is improved. Wireless USB also allows many more devices to be connected simultaneously through one connection so multiple devices can be connected directly just one host computer.
