How to Feed and Care For 100% Cotton T-Shirts

Although ringspun cotton is very durable, proper care is crucial to protect their original condition.
Gently Wash Your T-Shirt
While 100% ringspun cotton will last for years even if it is thrown into the wash with the rest of the laundry, this isn't the best way to care for your clothing. Rougher materials can pull, stretch, or rub against the 100% ringspun cotton t-shirt fabric. Follow these steps to properly wash with your new t-shirts:
Separate your t-shirts into three loads based on color. Many people only separate their colors into light and dark, but can't quite decide what to do with the brights. They can be washed with your darker t-shirts, but it's often better to place them in their own pile.
Choose a delicate detergent. Remember to only use the recommended amount of laundry detergent. Today's products are concentrated, and more doesn't always mean better or cleaner.
Pre-treat any stains. Use a commercial spray or stick to apply a small amount directly to the stain. You can blot the stain, but never rub the fabric. Allow the pre-treatment to work for about an hour before starting the wash.

Set your washer on the delicate cycle and use cold water. Although some labels indicate that hot or warm water is acceptable, cold water is safe for all fabrics and results in less shrinking or fading.
Remove the t-shirts soon after the final rinse cycle is done. Gently shake each one to remove some of the wrinkles before drying. If you leave your t-shirts in the washing machine for hours, mold and mildew can begin to grow.
What About Fabric Softener?
Your 100% ringspun cotton t-shirt will be soft without fabric softener. However, a little bit of this laundry product can prevent static cling and add a nice, understated fragrance to your laundry. Choose either a liquid fabric softener to go in the rinse water or a dryer sheet.
Drying 100% Ringspun Cotton T-Shirts
While many people think drying their t-shirts on a hanger or line will extend their life, this technique can make the shirts feel slightly stiff, leave stubborn creases and wrinkles, and even stretch the material. Instead, tumble dry your t-shirts on a low temperature setting. They will come out warm and ready-to-wear. Never dry them on high settings for long periods of time because it can shrink them.

Once they are completely dry, your t-shirts can be hung or folded. If you're hanging them, skip the cheap wire hangers and invest in a higher-quality item that will protect the shape of the shoulders. Although hanging a t-shirt is the best way to prevent wrinkles, it's perfectly acceptable to fold and stack them. Never force them into an area where they won't fit easily. This can lead to creases, wrinkles, and stretching. To prevent fading, don't hang or stack them in an area that's exposed to direct sunlight.
