Every actor can agree that having an agent cam mean the difference between working and not working, but not all agents are created equal. So let me set you up with how to find the right agent for you. It is really all about research, so your first job is to identify the credit you would like to add to your resume next.

For example, let's say you want to add a nice co-star credit on a one-hour television drama. With that credit in mind, the next step is to visit my favorite industry resource, IMDb Pro. This is the Pro version of the Internet Movie Database, and if you don't have a Pro account yet, you really need to invest in one. In my opinion, it's one of the resources an actor cannot live without.

After you know the credit you want to add to your resume next, it's time to log into IMDb Pro and look up the series or the film that offers the most opportunities for that credit. For my co-star example, typically the television series with the most opportunities for co-stars are one-hour procedural dramas. So, let's say you look up Criminal Minds. Click on the full credits option. From there, you can see every actor who has been on that series thus far.

I want you to identify the actors with the co-star credits. Those are the smaller credits, so perhaps their character doesn't have a last name or only has a job title instead of a name. Next, I want you to find out who their agents are. Essentially, the best way to find the right agent for you is to research backward from the credit you want to add to your resume next. You want to concentrate on the size of the credit, not the type of role or character.

This research might take you a little bit of time, but the result will be a perfectly formed, highly informed list of agents who get their actors in the rooms you really want to be in.
