However, there might be a time when the iPad's 3G simply does not work and it is not because there is no service. It is because you either upgraded to iOS 4.2 or you are experiencing a separate issue. Here is how you can troubleshoot and fix a 3G service gone bad. Now stop pulling your hair out because we have a solution for you.
Fix A Broken 3G Service On The iPad
With all the great things iOS 4.2 brought us, it also delivered a few new surprises. Namely some bugs. Over on the Apple forums there were reports of people having 3G issues (see below) after upgrading to iOS 4.2. But I have also seen these on 3.2 as well so if you have not yet upgraded then this article might help you too.
In the case of the the iOS 4.2 upgrade and the 3G issues, it appears that the main cause is a bug where the iPad does not immediately recognize the SIM card.
The iPad 3G Symptoms
Network status indicator (upper left corner) shows "No Service" instead of "AT&T 3G" (and, of course, no cellular connectivity). Wi-Fi works normally.
No "View Account" button on Cellular Data screen in Settings
Under "About", Carrier and Cellular Data Number showed as "Unknown" or "Unavailable"
Reduced connectivity and weaker signal
The iPad 3G Solutions
Here are some things you can try to fix the 3G issues if you are experiencing any on your iPad. Any one of these may get it working.
Bring up the Settings app. Set "Airplane Mode" on for a short period, then turn it back off. Under "General", choose "Reset" then select "Reset Network". Confirm that you want to reset all network settings. Power the iPad completely off then turn it back on.
It may be an APN issue. Tap on Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings. If you notice that the settings are blank then go to AT&T website or call support and find out the new APN settings. Enter those settings and your 3G will be back in no time flat.
If you are in the U.S.A. then you may only need to enter "broadband" in the AT&T setting with no username/password and your 3G should be back with no problems.
