How to Get Rid of Raccoons

A chore that no home owner needs to deal with is having to get rid of raccoons

. Although they may look very cute on TV, they are certainly a bona fide pest to have on your property. While in search of food and shelter they are likely to demolish your garden, pilfer your pet food and defecate all around your back yard. You may find holes ripped through your ductwork, insulation or wiring as the expert climbers have gone in search of shelter up in your roof or attic. Luckily, there is a way of ridding yourself of these furry menaces and ensuring that they never return.

Although raccoons can grow to an alarming 50lbs, they remain stealth movers and quick thinkers and are not easily put off by the presence of people. Being highly adaptable by nature makes them secure in the knowledge that they can find a warm, dry place either in your shed, garage or under your house where they can raise their young. They will often feed themselves during the night by pilfering through your garbage bins and cleverly entering your house through a pet door to steal their food instead.

Many people usually go in search of some variety of cheap or home made repellent, often found online, which are known to be effective as they usually contain ammonia or some type of foul smelling predator urine, which is all well and good, but the problem with just using one such method is that they are not strong enough, especially when used in a ventilated area. As with all bad smells, they are not exactly life threatening so a raccoon will just simply move a few yards away from it which doesn't exactly mean they are heading out for good. Solely using loud noise or bright lights is not appropriate either, you simply need to know what combination of repellent to use in order for it to work.

It is not legal in many jurisdictions to use trapping as a means of capture either and doing so can also pose a host of any problem scenarios for you as well, such as trapping your own pet or even that of the neighbors. Being highly intelligent, a raccoon will soon find it's way back if you try to relocate it as often it may have left some hungry babies behind in hard to reach places up in your attic or under your house. Dead or abandoned baby raccoons left on your property is not a highly entertaining thought either.

Assuming you already have a raccoon problem before you actually do is one way of preventing them arriving in the first place. By sealing up your garbage bins, even when they are not in use and also ensuring that they are kept clean at all times will prevent any attractive smelling food odor that is so appealing to a sharp scented raccoon. If they think there is no food around then they will have no reason to stay. Knowing there are raccoons in the area, it may be worth considering locking up any accessible pet doors you have, at least until you know that they have cleared off. Don't leave your property open to invitation either by having holes in your fencing or loose shingling in your roof as they will often be looking for a place not only to eat but to sleep as well.

Sometimes we can do our utmost best to prevent these unwanted guests invading our lives and yet still they seem hell bent on moving in. If this is the case then you may have to consider calling in the experts, at least they will get the job done right first time and it will surely save you a ton of stress, time and money over the coming months.
