Finding a 'stay-at-home' income can be daunting. For no fault of your own you may find yourself spending more time at home. You may be retired, or unable to work through ill-health. The financial situation may have brought redundancy. To work at home requires careful thought in case you launch yourself into costly schemes and systems that don't work.
So what are the options? Quite naturally, after the usual envelope stuffing, ironing service or child-care options, you will think of the internet. This is where you need to have your wits about you and not get sucked into the ideas and hard-sell options that will be thrown at you.
What should be your first move?
Open a new, web-based email account. Yahoo or Hotmail will serve the purpose. Think about using a 'pen-name'. This will separate the 'junk' that will undoubtedly follow, from your personal mail, and you'll be able to see where it is coming from and from which forms and contact details you've given and filled in.
Now, find a file with loose pages, or an exercise book, to write down things like passwords and user names. Keep them in one place, physically, but as they increase you may want to save them on your computer and also on a memory stick.
You will need to do some research. Search engines like Yahoo, Ask and Google will be useful here. You may start with searches like 'making money from home', 'online income', 'home-based jobs'.
You will find scores of possibilities. Such things as filling in surveys, cut and pasting information, market research or product testing will gradually fall away to network marketing, blogging, writing articles, dropshipping, auctions, betting and gambling.
Quite often 'affiliate marketing' crops up so much that you take a closer look. What you won't know at this point is that it will open up the most amazing minefield or if you prefer, 'learning curve'.
If you have the wish and desire to pursue this road, it is satisfying. Forget about earning money immediately. 'Get-rich-quick' is the same as having the winning lottery ticket. But, as well as challenging it can be rewarding, and learning how to build a website is useful in itself.
HTML, links and back-links, SEO, sales letters, niche marketing and driving traffic will all become common terms. My advice is to keep some notes. Use the library to look up things that interest you, and don't try to do anything too quickly.
Eventually a few names will emerge of people who have 'made it' on the internet. Check them out by searching their names and reading reviews about them. Accept that it is the norm to hype up information and pitch their sales information in bright colours and capital letters and claim they could sell everything at a higher price. Try to read through all that and make a decision based on what other people say.
Also, there is a lot of free stuff you can read before spending a penny.
