How to Get the World to Respond to You - A Facebook Lesson
Let me be frank with you. I've never liked Facebook as much as I've hoped to. Even though it's seems so much fun, I never got to be comfortable with it. Honestly, I couldn't figure out why it didn't suit me. But that's until recently. Today I know exactly why I couldn't sync with Facebook, and I am taking corrective actions to make things right. So what was it about Facebook and me that didn't gel? It was this - I felt I am posting valuable content, but I was not getting anybody to respond to it. Very few, if at all, used to comment or like my content, and these were from friends that I am already acquainted with. But when I used to see other people getting a ton of comments, I used to unconsciously feel envious and used to ask myself as to what's got so many people participating in that topic? Yes, I did get the answer; and from a least expected source.
I was reading 'Lead The Field' by Earl Nightingale and there he relates a story on attitude. He cites a real-life case, where in a retired couple moved into a new neighborhood hoping to start off fresh. They had carefully selected this new neighborhood because the folks there seemed to have similar likings to theirs. However, just after 2 weeks the wife wanted to move out. Her complaint was that the neighbors were snobby and didn't socialize. They never talked to her and befriended her. When Earl heard about this, he asked the husband whether his wife had formally introduced herself to their neighbors. The husband replied, "No". Earl then asked whether the wife had taken the effort of meeting up with the local clubs? Again the reply was 'no'. Earl then advised the husband that the reason why the neighbors are ignoring his wife is because they think that she wants to be left alone. The neighbors think that the wife is a snob and doesn't want to befriend them since she doesn't come out of her house and talk to them. The problem was not the neighborhood; it was the wife's attitude towards the neighborhood.
So what's the lesson here guys? It's this - The world is a perfect reflection of our attitude. The world gives us what we put out in the first place. If we expect the world to treat us with respect and befriend us, then we need to FIRST treat the world with respect. It starts with US.
When I read this, the answer to my Facebook dilemma became clear. Can you see what was wrong? It's just that I never used to respond or comment on other's posts. I used to like it but never clicked on the 'Like' button, nor did I post my point-of-view on it. When I myself don't participate in other people's conversations, how can I expect others to participate in mine? That was the problem. Now I've learnt from my mistakes and suddenly, Facebook seems to be great place after all!
I hope you can take home this lesson, and apply it in your lives and not just Facebook. So the next time somebody doesn't treat you right, instead of getting upset, ask yourself - "how did I treat him/her in the first place?" Set yourself straight, and the world will conform - in fact, it SHOULD conform. It's got no other choice.
