How to Get to Know Your Neighbors
You just moved into a new condominium home in a brand new neighborhood. Unfamiliar with your new surroundings and things to do in the area, you are eager to make friends and get to know your neighbors. Here are some simple ways to initiate contact with neighbors and start building new friendships:
Consider organizing a housewarming party.
More than likely, you will have a housewarming party and invite family and friends to check out your new home. Consider inviting a few of your neighbors over as well. This is a great way to engage in conversation and build relationships with your neighbors.
Get in the habit of saying hello.
As you are out and about in your neighborhood, smiling and saying hello is a natural extension of yourself and is a great way to initiate conversation and get to know your neighbors. If living in a complex and share a floor within a building, take a few minutes to go door to door and introduce yourself with a smile and handshake.
Attend community functions.
Most communities will post events on a central bulletin board, near the mailboxes, at the clubhouse or even through a social media platform such as Facebook. Whether a pool party, BBQ, community clean-up, pooch party, community association meeting, or holiday party, it is important to attend these events as they serve as an incubator for socialization and developing friendships.
If you have kids, arrange a play date.
If you notice a neighbor outside with children, take a few minutes to go over and introduce yourself and your child(ren). Suggest a day and time for a play date. Not only does this provide an opportunity for your child(ren) to make new friends, it allows for adult interaction while they play.
Offer help.
If you see a neighbor in your community who is elderly or handicapped or simply needs help, introduce yourself and offer to help (i.e., assisting with groceries, getting mail, etc.). What a great way to build friendships and camaraderie within the neighborhood.
