How to Give your Clients a Lit-from-Within Glow
With summer well on its way, tanned, healthy looking skin will be among your clients' top requests
. As artists, we should be thoroughly knowledgeable on how to create this look without having our clients look like oompa loompas. The first thing is to understand what "lit-from-within glow" means. This is that healthy, dewy look you have when you've been graciously kissed by the sun, perhaps in a fabulous sunny place while on vacation. Many clients will often ask for this look as it is a "must" among top celebrities and it's all over magazine covers. Follow these easy steps to create that ooh la-la glow!
Step1- Prep the Skin:
Begin with fresh, clean and moisturized skin. When skin is moist, makeup will go on smoother and sit better on your face. At this point, I have prepped the skin with moisturizer, eye cream and primer.
Step 2- Concealing, Contouring and Highlighting:
The purpose of concealing, contouring and highlighting is to build the face. Apply a liquid concealer under eyes to cover dark circles, use a cream concealer, which has a heavier consistency to cover blemishes and scars. A general rule of thumb for selecting foundation for contouring and highlighting is as follows: go one to two shades darker than your client's normal skin tone for contouring and one to two shades lighter for your highlighting. I applied contouring to:
The top of the forehead, where the hairline meets the skin
Underneath the cheekbones
Down the sides of the nose
On the upper part of the bridge of the nose
Underneath the tip of the nose to shorten it
I applied highlighter:
Under the eyes
Down the lower part of the nose
In the middle of the forehead
Under the brow bone
At the center of the chin
Step 3- Foundation:
Using a separate brush, I applied a thin layer of cream beige foundation all over Angelina's face, which I thoroughly blended with the contouring and highlighting to create a seamless, smooth finish.
Step 4- Blush, Eyes, Powder and Lips:
Blush: I applied a peachy-pink blush in a circular motion on the apples of the cheeks.
Eyes: I wanted to enhance Angelina's beautiful, natural blue-green eyes, so I used neutral tones. I filled in her eyebrows with a taupe pencil to compliment her natural blonde hair. I applied a wash of a salmon tone shimmery eye shadow all over the eyelid (avoiding the brow bone) and then applied a medium brown matte shadow in the crease and underneath the lower lashes to create a soft smoky effect. Using a black liquid liner, I drew a line across the top of her lid, making sure to connect it with the lower lash line.
I went back with a light beige eye shadow and applied it to the brow bone, so that it would "bring out" this area. I lined the inner rim of her eyes with a black pencil and then curled the lashes. I applied false lashes to add some glamour to this look and finally, applied two coats of mascara to just the root of her natural lashes. I do not recommend applying mascara to the false lashes, as it creates a very unnatural effect.
Powder: To set the look, I used a small concealer brush dipped in translucent powder in the following areas: under the eyes, on the sides of the nostrils and on top of the cheekbones; and used a large puff to set the remaining areas with translucent powder.
Lips: I wanted to keep Angelina's lips light and neutral, so I lined and filled her lips with a flesh toned lip pencil and finished by adding a light peachy-pink gloss for a sexy pouty look. Following these easy steps you too can be well on your way to creating the sultry lit-from-within glow!
