Most orchids are divided into three categories. These are warm, intermediate and cool growing.

Warm varieties want and need the range of degrees to be at night sixty four and day to be seventy two to seventy four degrees. These orchid types can do very well in indirect sun up to eighty degrees.

The in-between groups want like sixty degrees at night and sixty eight during the day. These orchids to will tolerate indirect sun to seventy five degrees. The varieties of orchids include Cattleyas and Dendrobiums.


Cool growing plants want a temperature range of fifty five degrees at night and sixty five degrees during the day. Again these orchids will take a little more heat during the day but additional shade is required.

Knowledge of the differing temperature ranges can help us to decide which of the orchids to buy for our home. The last thing we want to do is spend our money then find out we made a poor choice. Think about the room or area of the home the orchids will be placed. We can control watering and sunlight, however a constant room temporal climate could be a bigger challenge. Can your room have a thermostat that is regulated by times of day, warmer in the day and cooler at night? Most of us who conserve energy will have our homes on a timed thermostat.
