Submitting your website to search engine directories is one of the easiest ways to promote an online business. But 'easy' doesn't mean 'guaranteed.' There are several things that can prevent a website from directory inclusion, and ultimately kill networking and sales opportunities. If you want to guarantee your website's directory inclusion, use these tried and tested strategies. They're fool-proof!

1. Have a quality website. Every directory submission campaign should start with a good, quality website full of valuable content. Couple valuable content with a good site design, and you've already won half the battle. To understand why, you have to look at what directory administrators want to accomplish.

Directory administrators want to establish trust between themselves and their visitors, and a lot of that trust-building effort depends on what admins allow in their directory. Each indexed site acts as a personal recommendation, and for that reason, many directory administrators just won't index poorly designed sites. They want a valuable index, which they get by admitting valuable websites.

2. Earn a good PR rating before submitting. You don't need a 4 or 5 PR rating to get inclusion, but let's face it - the higher your PR, the better your chances. PR ratings do two things for the directory administrator. They tell him or her (1) how popular, or valuable, a website is, and (2) what PR value a site may return to the directory. If you can share some of your PR gold, you'll really increase your chances of directory inclusion.

3. Properly fill out directory inclusion forms. This should go without saying, but you'll really ruin your chances by incorrectly filling out a directory's inclusion form. Don't put the wrong information in the wrong fields, and don't leave out any information that's requested. The submission process of a lot of site directories is automated, and incorrectly submitted forms are trashed before they're even seen. Give your submission a fighting chance by following directions.

4. Pay the fee, if required. All directories don't charge a fee, but the ones that do charge for a good reason. Most of the time, that reason is maintenance. Unless a directory is sponsored by a huge corporation of some sort, directory maintenance can impose some hefty out-of-pocket expenses. Fees cover those expenses, but they don't go unrewarded. Many directory admins give paid submissions a higher position in search results, while some will even offer a featured spot. Costs vary of course, but usually, the bigger the payment, the bigger the reward.

Following the steps above should guarantee inclusion in every directory you submit to. Except for gambling, sex, racist, and/or violence prone sites, every website has a fighting chance with these simple four strategies.
