Temper tantrums are one of the most dreaded experiences a parent could ever have. During this episode of emotional outburst; a child can scream, kick, cry, bite, hit or even throw things. What's really bad about this is that it can happen anywhere, even inside the church or the doctor's clinic.Before we even think about learning how to properly handle temper tantrums, we need to understand why it even happens. If you've noticed, tantrums usually follow when a child doesn't get what he wants or when he is asked to stop something that he enjoys doing. The child will try to negotiate with the parent a few times, and will only resort to the tantrum once he realizes that he won't get what he wants. Yes, the main cause of tantrums is frustration. There are two main things a parent can do. If you're inside the house, ignoring the child's behavior is the best way to go. Sometimes, you're not even sure why the child is crying. As long as he's not hungry or hurt, let him cry it out. Don't acknowledge what he is doing, don't make eye contact and leave the room if necessary. Just make sure that he is safe inside the area. If the tantrum occurs while in a public place, take your child somewhere else. It can be the car, the bathroom or outside the building. If he won't stop, then buckle up and leave. This is something that you need to keep on doing until he gets the message (Throw a tantrum and we will leave. Fun's over). My child used to throw a fit whenever she couldn't get her way in the playground (like go on a swing first) and I would just pick her up and leave even when we just arrived. That stopped her from doing it after a few times. Tantrums can happen several times a day, especially during the terrible twos. I know how frustrating it can be sometimes, but remember never to resort to child punishment because of it. Spanking your kid will never make the situation right. On the contrary, it will only show them that violence is okay and that you can use it when you don't get something you want.
