In my opinion, to best help others you must practice selflessness. This definition serves to illustrate me point very well. In order to best server and help others, you must start by putting others before yourself. Putting others before yourself can leave you in a vulnerable position, and for this reason it is often much appreciated by those you help. Aside from peoples appreciation I can guarantee that in helping others you will you will feel self fulfillment. Nothing can explain how good it feels to have someone look in your eyes and say "thank you", and really mean it from the bottom of their hearts.

Okay so you're no longer putting yourself first, now how can you start helping people?

Time

Donate your time by working at a local food bank or shelter. Most cities and towns have a food bank or homeless shelter that is operated on a strictly donation basis. This is very difficult if you consider they are practically running a business off of donations. Your time is valuable and would be greatly appreciated by the charities coordinator, as well as the users of the charities services. Keep in mind there are other options for community service than food banks and shelters. Check your local newspaper listings for more ideas.

Money

A donation that is always appreciated, and for obvious reasons, is money. Often charities will take donations and use them to help people in need. You must be careful, however, in picking a reputable charity. There are many charities operating today where only some percentage of your money goes toward helping the needy. I think the best for of help is unexpected. Walking that little old lady across the street would fall under this category. It is something you do out of the kindness of your heart for the benefit of someone else. It could be paying a stranger that extra buck so they can get in the movie with their friends. Or it could be something as big as giving your car to a school's drivers education program (with a certain vehicular fate soon to follow). Being positive is one of the simplest ways to be helpful. Just telling someone that "you like their earrings" or opening the door could be enough to turn their day around.
