How to Hit Golf Irons - Tips You Need to Know to Master Your Iron Play

Learn how to hit golf irons and watch how your golf game will evolve

. For many golfers the difference between scoring low and high is the ability to hit both long and short irons effectively. I could vary rarely ever score under 100 until I worked on my golf swing and started to focus on improving my iron play.

Look I am here to tell you that it did not happen overnight. Any improvement you want to make requires time and effort. Now to help you utilize your time wisely, a training aid will help expedite the process of improving. I know how frustrating it is to have to use a 5 wood on a par three because you can not hit an iron. I know how frustrating it is when your short game constantly leaves you with 50 foot puts.

I am telling you it doesn't have to be like that any longer. Here are some tips that I learned while fixing my golf swing and improving the performance of my irons.

Focus on where the ball is in your stance. I know simple stuff but a ton of golfers don't know this stuff. For long irons the ball should be toward the lead foot. For wedges the ball should be very near to the trailing foot. For middle irons, you get the picture, toward the middle.

A view that I had for hitting irons is that you need to have a one swing for your irons and another swing for your woods. Well I am here to tell you that I was wrong. You have to develop the same swing regardless of what club your hitting. So these same tips will apply for both irons and woods.

One of the first things that helped me was keeping the lead elbow straight throughout the swing. Yes it caused me to loose some distance but it produced straight fluid shots. Eventually, the more straight shots I hit I started to add distance by slightly bending the elbow and reaching back further on the back swing. However, For now just focus on a straight lead elbow.

Remember to keep the trailing elbow close to the body at all times, the elbow should be tucked into the side when the down swing begins. The hands wrists should not break on the back swing and when the club shaft reaches 8 o' clock the hozel should be pointing straight up.

Follow these tips in conjunction with a training aid and you will see results. I shaved 20 strokes off my game but it took time and patience on my part. Playing better golf and having fun again can happen when you make the choice to improve.
