How to Hypnotize Someone - Process Revealed

Before I cover the process of how to hypnotize somebody I want to explain the history behind it and how it was discovered.

In the 1800s James Braid took "mesmerism" out of dark age mysticism, studied it, and originally coined the term "hypnosis". He found that it wasn't a magical fluid that was the cause of the hypnosis phenomenon but rather language and suggestion, and certain thoughts and ideas. Interestingly enough, he was also the first to discover that hypnosis could occur during the "waking state" and actually tried to change the word 'hypnosis' to what he called 'monoideaism'. Now, the word 'monoideaism' never caught on, but it's meaning is actually very interesting. 'Monoideaism' means 'mono' = a single, 'ideaism' (for 'idea') = thought or idea. And this is what (conversational) hypnosis is really all about: you're making people focus on a single thought or an idea to such an extent that it becomes real for them.

So, now that we know the true definition and intention of hypnosis, we can explore the 4 stage process of hypnotic induction.

Step 1: Absorb Attention

Step 1 is about capturing people's focus. When you absorb people's attention, you're drawing them into you and making sure that all their thoughts are following along the lines that you're setting out for them.

Step 2: Bypass The Critical Factor

Now, before you actually get them to respond on an unconscious level to you, the second step is to bypass the part of their reasoning that says "No." I'm sure you're familiar with the scenario of providing advice to a friend, family member, or co-worker and they reject it for no apparent reason other than it seems like a knee-jerk response. And for most people it is. That's why it's so important to bypass. There's a whole plethora of techniques out there for doing this sort of thing that far surpasses the breadth of my humble little blog. But after, and only after, you do this will people be open to your suggestion.

Step 3: Activate An Unconscious Response

Step 3 is to 'activate an unconscious response'. At this stage ANY unconscious response is a good response. It does not matter what it is.

The obvious example of an unconscious response is an emotional response. You don't choose to have an emotion at a particular point in time. It occurs to you as a result of your thinking and your general disposition. You'll notice that people who are particularly emotional are virtually immune to reason. This is because they're being put under the hypnotic spell of past programming that was triggered by some situation. Once you actually get the unconscious to respond to you have something to work with for the reasons given below.

Step 4: Lead The Unconscious To Desired Outcome

Step 4 is all about leading the unconscious responses into a desired outcome'. Now this is a whole topic in itself which entire books have been written on so, again, I won't be able to cover that any time soon (or even - there's already excellent information out there if you know where to look).

In conclusion, if you do those 4 things you will have a conversational hypnotic interaction. It's as simple as that. That should help you get further along your journey of becoming a proficient conversational hypnotist. No matter what techniques you may pick up, never forget this framework since systems, after all, are more important than tools.
