Sprints are known to be one of the most effective methods of promoting one's performance, if one does them regularly before the game begins. This is done by running at a fast pace for 25 yards, which basically helps in making you a fast runner.
Once you have done the plain sprints for a long period of time, you can then shift to sprinting in between cones. These cones are kept zigzag on the ground, so that one has to run while turning to each side and avoiding them.
A much simpler form of drill that can be practiced by children is that of running in between a ladder. On the floor, just lay down a ladder and run while skipping the rungs. This helps greatly in promoting the coordination of one's legs and body.
In any sport, one has to be good at being alert, halting at times and then suddenly getting to action. Such exercises play a major role in increasing the ability of the athlete as the reaction time becomes a lot better, making the person flexible and ready to act.
