Decking in the garden gives the effect of automatically transforming the space and can turn an untidy looking lawn into a neat and smart area. It also gives you somewhere to sit in the summer, dine al fresco and for the children to play.

A small deck will take you a weekend; if you intend to build something a bit bigger or you've never done it before, you may need a little help, or some more time and it will cost you from around two hundred pounds to put in.

The first thing you need to do is mark out the position of the decking, using pegs and string. This is the most accurate way to establish where you want it to go. Clear the site and level it as much as you can, and then lay a weed proof membrane and cover it over with gravel.

Cut the joists to the right size to create the frame. The frame is then filled with floor joints, and then you will need to make up the deck bearer. Use countersunk screws to secure at each joist. Once this is done, you can lay the deck boards, which need to be cut to the angle required. Screw them in, and use extra deck boards to cover the exposed cut ends. Seal any ends with wood preservative to avoid wood rot.
