You could ask a friend to teach you how. And then of course, you have the internet. Online, there are many websites, blog sites and videos that give you a step by step beginner's guide on how to learn to play the guitar, this is one of them.

Let's begin with the basics - the parts of a guitar. A guitar has 5 parts, namely:

Body: the big 8-shaped bulk with a hole in the middle

Bridge: the vertical line found in between the edge of the body and the hole. This is where all 6 strings are attached

Neck: the long horizontal wood attached to the body

Frets: the divisions on the neck

Tuning Pegs: the 6 white heads at the edge of the neck used for tuning the strings

The guitar has a total of six strings and each string has a corresponding note. In a descending order, the notes are E (6th string), A (5th), D (4th), G (3rd), B (2nd), E (1st). An Open note is played when your right hand simply strums a string without touching the frets.

Another tip on how to learn to play the guitar is to familiarize yourself with chords. Chords are a combination of musical notes played simultaneously. The very basic chords are E, E minor, A, A minor, D, D minor, C and G.

Here's an example of how a chord is played:

E minor: place your second finger at second fret of fifth string, and third finger on second fret of the fourth string underneath the other finger

Remember that finger placement is very important and the amount of pressure you apply influences the sound.

Learning the guitar requires a lot of practice and familiarization. Just be patient and enjoy your learning.
