How to Make Cat Nip Toys
Cat nip toys are a source of enjoyment for the cats. These toys can be purchased from the market and can be easily made at the home as well. The basic construction of a cat nip toy consists of a pouch in which dried cat nip is filled. The pouch can be of different materials ranging from ordinary cloth to animal skins. If nothing is available, a cat nip toy can be made simply by filling an unused sock with cat nip and sewing its open end.
The only skills that you will ever need are sewing and a little practice in drawing patterns that will interest the cat. Start by drawing a shape of a bird or any other animal that might visually attract the cat. Then trace this pattern on a piece of cloth. Next, cut the cloth making sure to keep some extra cloth on the periphery of the outline to allow for sewing. Lastly, the cloth is sewed save for a small opening through which dried catnip is added. After addition of the cat nip, the small opening is also sewed. A refillable pouch can be made by the addition of a flap and Velcro to the opening instead of sewing it permanently. In this way, stale cat nip can be replaced with freshly dried one.
Toys also carry choking hazards and cats like children must not be provided with toys with which they can harm themselves accidently. Choking hazard can be due to small buttons, strings or other small pieces that could be torn off the toy. When swallowed, these parts could cause intestinal blockage or choking and will require veterinary intervention. The solution is to use durable materials for making the toy and to replace the toy as it is worn out.
A variety of materials are available at the market that can be used to make cat nip toys. These include:
Felts, which can be purchased from fabric and craft stores and the cats like it in red and pink colors. It can be used to make a pouch to fill in with dried cat nip.
Furs, which are also available from craft stores. Usually, rabbit pelts are the best and the cats really seem to enjoy them. You will need a little more effort to work with real animal pelts but it worth it.
Wool pom-poms are easily available from the craft stores. There is no sewing and cutting to be done with these. Simply place these in a plastic bag with some dried catnip for a week and they will absorb the aroma of the cat nip.
