How to Make Curry Powder At Home

I don't think I've made it much of a secret that I absolutely love curry powder. Honestly I probably overuse the spice blend, but I just love the stuff. Of course, curry powder is technically a Western invention meant to duplicate south Asian flavors, but it's a flavor that I've grown to love. I use my curry powder for everything from lentils and cauliflower to squash and even chili. When you use curry powder as much as I do, though, the cost starts to add up. That's why I like to use this curry powder recipe to make a homemade version. Not only do I save money in the long run, but I think this curry powder recipe tastes better than most store-bought versions anyway.

My Homemade Curry Powder Recipe:

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon whole cumin

2 tablespoons whole coriander

1 teaspoon dried turmeric

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon whole cloves

1 teaspoon cardamom

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, more or less to taste

Instructions:

Place a wide pan over medium heat, and toast the cumin and coriander for about 5 minutes, or until the seeds start to just change color and become aromatic.

In a coffee grinder, place the toasted cumin and coriander and the whole clove and blend until it becomes a fine powder.

Combine the freshly ground cumin, coriander and cloves with turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom and cayenne pepper in an airtight container. Shake well to combine and store until ready for use.

I like this curry powder recipe because it's so basic. Of course, you can change and alter the curry powder ingredients based on your tastes. I sometimes like to add a little extra turmeric and cayenne pepper. I've seen curry powder recipes with everything from ground bay leaves and dry mustard to fenugreek and dried mango powder. The nice thing about making your own curry powder is that you can adjust, add and subtract spices to your own tastes. Also, I've noticed that curry powder recipes often have salt, black pepper or garlic. While these are all essential ingredients to my curries, I like to add them separately based on taste. Adding them to the curry powder, though, makes it easier during cooking, so decide for yourself first how you plan on using this curry powder recipe before adding other spices
