How to Make Gel Candles at Home

I love candles. I always have. Over the years I have spent a lot time wandering through candle shops, and I've spent quite a bit of money in those candle shops. One day, I decided I would try to start making my own. I had been to a friend's house and she had a collection of candles she purchased from a woman in Northern Arizona. They were beautiful, and they were homemade. And that was the day I started my hobby, which over the years has grown into my own little business.

After doing a little research I decided that making gel candles was where I'd begin. Learning how to make gel candles was not difficult at all, and I was thrilled at the decorative possibilities. See, gel candles are transparent, and are usually poured into glass containers. So I was looking forward to the embeds that I would use.

When I started making the gel candles, I had just been on vacation at the beach...so that was the theme of my candles. I bought some candle wax and blue candle dye from the art supply store, and brought out my collection of seashells. I had my double boiler, my coconut essential oil. I also purchased zinc wicks, as I had read that cotton wicks are not appropriate for use in gel candle making. Cotton will soak up too much of the gel. Take care when buying supplies for gel candles, as many of the dyes, fragrances and other supplies are specific to gel candles alone. In the beginning, buying a gel candle making kit may be an option, for then you will know that you have exactly what you need.

I was lucky enough to have found a few glass containers that were shaped liked seashells, which was going to further enhance my whole seashore theme. When choosing the glass containers for pouring hot wax into, make sure that the glass is pretty thick. The thinner containers are too delicate and may crack when the wax is poured or the candle is burned.

So I cut the wax into small pieces and started to melt it slowly. I added the blue color and slowly mixed in my essential oil. I carefully dipped my pieces of shells into the warm wax and stuck them onto the inside of the vases. In this way I was able to create a pattern with the shells, that would hold firm even when I poured the hot wax. I then stuck the end of the wick into the warm wax as well, and secured it to the bottom of the vase. It's important to make sure that the wick stays straight and vertical, so I fixed it to a wooden skewer to hold it upright when I poured the wax.

And then...I poured the wax. I was so pleased with the outcome, that I invited some friends over for dinner that night, with my new candles as the centerpiece. And wouldn't you know it?...that very night I had orders for two candles. That was ten years ago, and I've been selling my homemade candles ever since.
