How to Write a Metaphor

Three easy steps to make your own metaphors

1. Think about what you want to describe: The first step in writing a metaphor is to figure out what you want to describe. You can describe people, places, things, actions, or even ideas. Before trying to express yourself figuratively, however, you should think about how you would say it in literal language. In other words, just try to describe something.

A. I want to say that my teacher is mean.

B. I want to say that the soccer player ran fast on the field.

C. I want to say that people need to be free.

2. Think of something else that shares that description: Once you've determined what you are trying to describe, think about something else that shares that trait. Remember, a metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things, and the greater the differences between the two things you are comparing, the better the metaphor you will create. This may take some practice to do correctly. But, if you are spending more than a couple minutes on your metaphor and a good idea isn't coming to your head, it may be better for you to start over with a different idea. Keep trying until you catch your inspiration. Observe the examples.

A. I feel that a pit bull is also mean.

B. I feel like a humming bird is fast.

C. I feel like people need oxygen.

3. Combine your two ideas: Once you have selected what you will describe, and you've thought of something else that shares that description, you can combine them. Don't use "like" or "as" to join your ideas, unless you want to make a simile. Don't be afraid to add extra words or change some things around in your sentence (notice that in example C I added "the human soul" to my metaphor.

A. My teacher is a pit bull in the classroom.

B. The soccer player is a hummingbird on the field. .

C. Freedom is oxygen for the human soul.

Making metaphors is as easy as 1-2-3. Just think about what you want to describe, think of something else that shares that description, and join the ideas without using "like" or "as." Remember: for a metaphor to be effective the things you are comparing need to be dissimilar. The less that they have in common the more interesting the metaphor is.
