How to Make a Wireless LAN Connection for a Laptop

How to Make a Wireless LAN Connection for a Laptop

You can establish a wireless local area network (LAN) connection for your laptop using a device known as a wireless router. Depending on the type of wireless router you choose, you can establish one of three types of wireless networks: 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. All wireless-enabled devices within the range of the router will be able to access the internet and communicate with each other, once the router is installed.

Check whether your laptop is wireless-enabled. A laptop with a built-in Wi-Fi feature will be able to communicate with a wireless router, and be able to send and receive signals. If your laptop is not equipped with Wi-Fi, you can still connect it to a wireless network using a wireless card. You will need one wireless card for every laptop you want to connect.

Insert the wireless card into your laptop's PCI slot. Insert the software CD and install the driver for the hardware by following on-screen instructions. You will not need the card if your laptop is already wireless-enabled.

Turn off the modem and unplug it from the AC mains. Never attach or disconnect cables from electronic devices with a live power source.

Hook up the wireless router with the modem. Unplug the network cable from the main computer if you already have an internet connection on a desktop and insert it on the port labeled "Internet,""WAN" or "WLAN" on the back of

the router. If you do not have a computer with an Internet connection, plug in one end of the network cable that came with the router into the back of the modem, and the other end to the "Internet," "WAN" or "WLAN" port on the back of the router.Laptop LCD Screen(LCD Screen )

Power up the modem. Wait five to 10 minutes for the modem to connect to the Internet, and then power up the router. Wait until the light on the "Internet," "WAN" or "WLAN" port lights up. When the LED lights up, it means the router has started communicating with the modem.

Load the router's software CD and install the driver. Follow on-screen instructions to configure the router with your wireless devices, and establish a wireless network. The configuration process may vary depending on the router manufacturer.USB WIRELESS LAN Adapter(WIRELESS USB LAN Adapter)

Input the SSID, WEP or WPA, and the administrator password when prompted. The SSID is the name of your wireless network, WEP and WPA are part of the router's security features to restrict unauthorized access, and the administrator password controls the wireless network and router's settings. One pair 85Mbps PowerLine Communication HD Ethernet Adapter

Activate the laptop's wireless feature. On laptops with built-in Wi-Fi, the feature can be turned on by a switch, usually located near the keyboard, and with a small antenna icon. For laptops with PCI wireless cards, the feature is turned on from its software. Click on the wireless icon from the system tray and view available networks in the vicinity. Click on your network's SSID and select "Connect." When prompted, type in the password.
