How to Manage You Lithium Notebook Batteries

HP Laptop batteries have had several changes in their core chemistry since the category first existed, ranging from old NiCad batteries to Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and onward to the current generation of Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries. Lithium batteries don't have the memory issues that older batteries do, but there are some tricks to managing them.

Let your battery charge up completely when you first put it into your computer. Consult your computer's manual for how to install the battery before doing this.

Try to run your battery down to 10% charge at least once a week and then fully recharge it. The chemistry that makes your lithium battery work needs to be cycled to keep the battery flexible in charging and discharging.

Calibrate your battery's charge roughly once every three months to make sure that the battery monitoring software works as it's supposed to.

Charge Cycles and Storage

Because your battery has a finite number of charge cycles (nearly a thousand for most laptop batteries), it's worth it to manage them carefully; using your battery down to the 10% level will maximize the use of the battery over its designed life span.

Your battery will effectively 'burn' charge cycles whenever it's stored in hot places. Don't leave your computer in the car on a sunny day--even a few hours at 100+ degrees counts as several charge and discharge cycles.

If you're going to have your laptop plugged in constantly while it's in use, remove the battery. Even trickling power through it will slowly degrade its charge cycle status.

If you're going to be putting the laptop into storage, discharge the battery down to 10% or so, and put it in a cool place--don't freeze the external laptop battery, but the coldest room in your home (about 45-50 degrees) should be about right.

How to Calibrate a Notebook Battery

A notebook or laptop is a portable, lightweight computer. It can either be powered with an AC adapter plugged into an electric outlet or a rechargeable battery. A notebook rechargeable battery has a life span of 12 to 24 months. After that time, the battery may begin to lose its efficiency, reducing the amount of time the battery can power the laptop. Prior to discarding the battery and purchasing a new one, you should attempt to calibrate the battery to see whether it improves the efficiency of the battery.

Plug the AC adapter into an electric outlet and into the laptop. Turn off the computer. Allow the AC adapter to charge the battery for eight hours.

Turn on the laptop. Navigate to the control panel, and select the "Performance and Maintenance" option followed by the "Power Options" tab. A menu will then be displayed with different options. Locate the power scheme option and click on the bubble next to "Always On." Locate the running on batteries setting and click on the bubble next to "Never." At the bottom of the page, click "OK."

Remove the AC adaptor. Allow the system to run until it uses all of the battery life and shuts down.

Plug in the AC adapter and allow it to recharge the battery for eight hours.
