Choosing a good name for your business or project is very important. A good name will be easy for customers, clients or users to remember. It will also make your business more popular and easier to promote and develop. Here are some tips to help you chose the perfect name:

Tip #1:

Before you even start your creativity engine, be ready to Google search and check the domain name availability. You don't want to be spending precious time on coming up with creative and catchy name only to find later that someone already beat you and registered the domain, or even worse, registered it as a trademark.

Tip #2:

Make a list of all the words that are relevant to your business or project. Then go to your favorite domain suggestion tool and let it do its magic. Consider using domain hacks, like the famous Delicious or even using random generators if you are completely lost. Also check out Google sets for new ideas for your list.

Tip #3:

Use Latin or any other language. Many great companies used this technique. For example: Verizon, Acer, Lenovo, Sony, Volvo. All you need is a Latin to English dictionary and you are set to go. Getting names from the different mythologies is less advisable since the variety is not that great.

Tip #4:

Don't intentionally misspell a word to make it unique. Unless your project becomes instantly famous and well known, like Digg, most users will search for the traditional spelling and fail to find your product.

Tip #5:

Make sure the name you chose for your product can be easily and instinctively pronounced. Some projects did ignore this one but still had success, like MySQL and nginx, you however might not be this lucky.

Choosing a good name is very important, but you should not neglect your product. A good product will make the name no matter how unsophisticated it is to look good, for example Apple and Windows.
